Before the 19th century Stoneware was mostly used to make storage vessels, usually in grey or brown. In Germany early centres of production included Westerwald and the Rhineland.
From the 18th century European artists and potters such as Carries, Mutz, Wedgwood and Leach made advances in stoneware production. English innovations such as jasper and basalt became popular throughout Europe.
Stoneware is still produced today. It is widely used in sanitaryware.
