People & Potteries --- eLearning: 7. Decoration

7. Decoration

Porcelain can be decorated in different ways. Hand-painting is the oldest method for porcelain decoration. It can be applied in under-glaze or on-glaze technique. Painting is still a common practice at pottery studios and manufactories. It is complex and requires a good qualification and a long experience.

Other decoration methods are, for example, lustre painting with a pearlescent-like surface, or etching techniques which normally are combined with gold painting. As for tableware gold-plated handles and knobs can frequently be seen as well as gold-plated rims on plates.
