People & Potteries --- eLearning: 5. Biscuit firing and glazing

5. Biscuit firing and glazing

Glazes are thin, glassy coatings. They consist of kaolin, quartz and a higher proportion of feldspar. Grinded to powder and mixed with a lot of water in the glaze tub they form a milky white liquid.

For a long time glazing was carried out without machine employment. Great skill is required to apply the glaze evenly on all parts and to avoid drops. Using lead in glazes has long been a problem. The lead was absorbed through the skin and sometimes caused severe health problems.
